The Furman Golf Club of South Carolina
The Furman Golf Club - enjoy your remarkable experience while playing golf at the top of college golf courses in the country. The Furman Golf Club continues to be voted #1 Public Golf Course in the Upstate by way of the South Carolina Golf Ratings Panel, ranked No. 16 in Golfweek's "Best Campus Courses” in 2015 and has received a 3.5 star ranking from Golf Digest. It's also where Furman alums and professional golfers Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie Pepper and Brad Faxon honed their college games.
The challenging, par-72 layout underwent an essential renovation in 2008, where all 18 greens were reconstructed under USGA specifications and reseeded with Champion UltraDwarf Bermudagrass. A long-term master plan, implemented in 2010, has led completely to another practice facility for any Furman golf teams, enhanced public practice facilities, new tees to accommodate golfers of levels, bunker strategy improvement, refurbished cart paths, irrigation upgrades, major drainage installation and clubhouse enhancements. The course now also qualifies like a PGA Family Course.

Furman Golf course is situated on thebackside of the University campus. At this time rates were some of the most expensive in the area for daily fee courses, Rates w/cart was $48 weekday, $56 weekend. Pro shop and on course personnel were helpful and friendly.
The practice area is very large, however, it appears that only a small area is utilized. The region thetees were on seemed like a minefield, while all of those other practice tees looked untouched.
The course, redesigned a few years ago, is less than friendly. Elevated, crowned greens with plenty of false fronts that funnel the ball into one of the many bunkers are hard for most players. Have your ball roll off for a minimum of a number of greens. Bunkers had minimal sand in the bottom, and 2 feet of sand within the lips andround the edges.
The greens have many contours, and a lot of the pin positions were very iffy (located tubing hills, reminded me of a handful of holes for the Putt-Putt course). Greens were in fine shape, very firm and fast.
They actually have several groups oftees to shorten the course for seniors and women, but that will not lessen the impact of the crowned greens. Good course for single digit handicaps, though you could pay saving money fees at a number of other fine courses in the area and have money remaining for lunch.

One Bad Review:
A very pricey increase for seniors during the week
The senior rate during the week was $30,00 for a long time and they got a new course manager originating from a private course in Florida. The incidence is $40.00 during the week for seniors. The increase is outrageous with the only real improvement being they will pave a lot of the cart paths.
A $10.00 increase is entirely too much and really should be changed here we are at the earlier rate. I use to relax and play there no less than once every seven days, but no more. The golf course is nice but is not worth a rise of your magnitude and is probably the most expensive within the Greenville area. I paid enough to set my daughter through four years offaculty at Furman and I thought this was an insult to older players. A legend in your head of the new course manager.
